Electricity is the great enabler of modern society
—- The Honourable Sergio Marchi
On June 1st, 2015, the Economic Club of Canada kicked off the beginning of National Electricity Month at Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa with a keynote speech by President & CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association, the Honourable Sergio Marchi.
The Hon. Marchi discussed the challenges facing Canada’s electricity industry, particularly regarding the complex infrastructure underpinning the electricity system – something that rarely crosses the mind of the average Canadian. He explained that across Canada, governments have postponed hard decisions and have under-invested in that infrastructure year after year. Much of Canada’s electricity infrastructure is nearing the end of its life cycle and is in need of being renewed, replaced, and modernized. While this will be a huge undertaking, lack of reinvestment will bring ominous consequences and large costs.
This is a major issue for Canadians right now. The governments face difficult choices that will impact our future. However, when faced with these decisions, the Hon. Marchi posed the question:
Can we live in and run our country without reliable electricity?
This is a problem that our current and future politicians (#shewillrun) must tackle.
