Dilma Vana Rousseff is the 36th and current President of Brazil. In addition to being Brazil’s first female president, Rousseff was appointed to a second four-year term after winning by the slimmest margin in the country’s election history.
Known as Brazil’s “Iron Lady”, Rousseff famously cleared her government of ministers facing corruption allegations and successfully fought to bolster the country’s social welfare program
Despite an unconventional history that includes a socialist past and a sting in jail for ties to guerilla Marxist groups, Rousseff gained international recognition as one of the world’s most powerful women and she became the first woman to ever open a United Nation’s General Assembly.
