Carleton and U of O Joint Women’s Chair not renewed

When I read this week’s edition of the fulcrum I saw a very interesting article about Dr. Agnes Whitfield, who took the position of Joint Chair in Women’s Studies at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. Her position was not renewed and that she is filing a grievance, which is what the article discusses in great detail.

What it doesn’t discuss as much is why the position was created in the first place and specifically why it was not renewed. While Equal Voice is not necessarily women’s studies affiliated, its always interesting to see a position such as chair that is held by a woman. I’m very curious how it came to be and how it is now gone. I’ll do some poking around on the websites of uOttawa and Carleton (not tonight, I’m getting ready for our All Party Party, which I know you’ll be at) to see if there’s anything about it. There may not be, however, given that a grievance has been filed.

I hope we can discuss this at our meeting on Wednesday, October 6 at 7pm in Cafe Alt.
