I work to elect more female MPs so my daughter won’t have to

Letter from Equal Voice Executive Director Nancy Peckford on Electing More Women to Political Office –Ottawa Citizen

For the entirety of Canada’s history, women’s electoral representation has hovered around or well below the 25-per-cent mark at the national, regional and municipal levels.

In her opinion article Sheila Gervais and in her column Janet Bagnall (“Women want in” Sept. 21) suggested the culture of Canada’s political parties and our current public financing regime contribute to perpetuating the status quo.

As the executive director of Equal Voice, a national, non-profit advocacy organization, we are on a mission to change that. As a mother of a one-year-old daughter, I feel I have no choice.

I work to elect more female MPs so my daughter won’t have to.
